Last week our girls played their D2 regional final against a very tough opponent in Tullow C.S. With the weather adding to what was already a hotly contested game both teams were at it from the first whistle. Back and forth both teams went at each other for the first 20 minutes of the game with no one getting the better of each other. As Creagh pushed and pushed we just couldn’t string that final pass to cause Tullow problems. In the opposite side of the pitch our defense stood strong to whatever was thrown at them until Tullow broke through and their striker hit a thunderous strike towards the corner of our goal but out of nowhere our goalkeeper Emma Quigg throw herself right and somehow managed to get a strong hand onto the shot pushing it onto the post and out to safety. A fabulous save to keep us in the game and we went into half time 0-0. With some strong words and a reminder of all they have achieved so far the girls were sent out to prove a point. In the second half Creagh started to create more and more chances but still lacked the killer strike to go ahead, until Creaghs captain Emma Fitzpatrick showed more determination than anyone to drive with the ball down the wing where she then cut inside and set up Ellie Byrne to one touch finish into the bottom corner.

Tullow then started to get on the ball more and were pushing Creagh hard but Creagh’s back line stood firm and gave up very little to their opponents. Again back and forth the game went. Some fantastic performances from both sets of players but Creagh’s determination showed through and we held onto the 1-0 score till the end.
History makers again!
These girls since coming into Creagh have been setting standards for all other girl soccer teams to follow and we are delighted that they have won the school’s first ever D2 regional final. This win gives them the opportunity to progress into the Leinster competition and we look forward to the Leinster semi final on a few weeks.
Every member of the squad has shown all the characteristics of winners and we hope they continue their success in Creagh.
A special mention on the day to the girls that played in this final from Emma in goal producing the save of the season to our backline standing firm all the way to our midfielders and strikers tirelessly running and chasing every opportunity to help their teammates, it was a tremendous sight to see.
